PARTNER MOVES - DLA Piper hires new partners in Australia

24 Apr 2020

Global law firm DLA Piper announces that leading tax disputes partner Paul McNab and litigation lawyer John Fogarty will be joining the firm in May.

Paul has more than 30 years’ experience in tax dispute resolution, particularly tax litigation. He will be joining DLA Piper from PwC’s Tax Controversy & Dispute Resolution group, where he has been a partner for over 20 years. During his time at PwC, Paul built a highly successful tax controversy and litigation practice, advising a range of international and Australian public and private companies, including a number of US clients with significant operations in Australia.

Prior to PwC, Paul worked at the Australian Taxation Office for eight years, where his work included a number of high-profile audits and the management of the resulting litigation and settlements. Paul will be based in Sydney.

John is an experienced litigation lawyer, joining DLA Piper from Corrs Chambers Westgarth, where he has been a member of the commercial litigation and class actions groups. His practice has focussed on Australian Consumer Law enforcement, and he has particular experience in consumer investigations, class actions, Royal Commissions and other commissions of inquiry. John will be based in Melbourne.

Commenting on these appointments, DLA Piper’s Managing Partner in Australia, Amber Matthews, said: “We are delighted to welcome Paul and John to our growing Australian partnership. Their capabilities and experience will be valuable additions to our Australian and global Tax and Competition practices, and enhance our offering to local and international clients.”

DLA Piper’s Head of Tax Australia, Jock McCormack, said: “We have a market leading tax offering, and Paul’s reputation in the Australian market represents a significant step in the further development of our tax litigation capabilities – particularly with important technical developments in Australia, and a constantly changing international tax environment.”

DLA Piper’s Head of Litigation and Regulatory Australia, Cameron Maclean, said: “The versatility of John’s skillset, and his broad commercial litigation experience will bolster our already strong mergers clearance and competition enforcement practice, and enable us to take advantage of a number of new opportunities in the market.
