Monthly Partner Hires, Office Openings and Merger Reports

The report breaks down into five key regions, providing a detailed analysis of the following data points:

  • Number of partner hire by UK/US/Global law firms in each region
  • Number of partner hires in key cities
  • Detailed practice area breakdown of partner hires by region
  • Names of all notable partner hires in month by region
  • Diversity of partner hires by region
  • Lateral partner promotions by region
  • Number of partners moving into senior in-house roles by region
  • Law firm mergers by region
  • Office openings/closures by region

The report includes data tables with the names of ALL partners joiners for that month. It also includes all partners involved in office openings.

*LEGAL MONITOR has identified relevant lateral moves that have taken place or been announced by law firms in the specified month. We have focused on identifying moves to or from the firms ranked in either the UK top 50, the Global 100 by PEP (provided they have an office in the UK and more than 5% of their fee earners are located in international offices) or select top-tier local firms in Australia, the Middle East and Ireland. Lateral moves have been identified through our Legal Intelligence tool, press announcements by firms and the legal press. Information is provided on a monthly basis for the specified month. If a move is announced and identified in a specific month, but the partner or partners are yet to join their new firm, the information regarding the move is included in the month of the announcement - in a later month when the partner joins the new firm they will not be included in that month’s information to limit the possibility of being double counted over a yearly period. For the purposes of this report:

  • Financial Year means 1 May 2019 to 30 April 2020.
  • International UK firm means a UK firm in the UK top 50 with offices outside of the UK that is not categorised as a Global firm.
  • Global firm means either Baker McKenzie, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, CMS, Dentons, DLA Piper, Eversheds Sutherland, Gowling WLG, Hogan Lovells, King & Wood Mallesons, Norton Rose Fulbright, Reed Smith, Squire Patton Boggs or Taylor Wessing.
  • US firm means a US firm that is within the Global 100 (by PEP), has an office in the UK and has at least 5% of its fee earners outside of the US. Partner expertise is categorised into one of 24 specific practice areas to allow for an aggregation of data.
  • Partners are categorised on the information that is available at the time of publishing this report and every effort has been made to ensure a level of consistency in approach throughout.
