PARTNER MOVES - Hill Dickinson expands Hong Kong Dispute Resolution team with hire of partner Yvette Yu

01 Apr 2021

Hill Dickinson Hong Kong is delighted to announce the arrival of Yvette Yu as the latest partner to join the firm’s growing Dispute Resolution team in Hong Kong.

Ms Yu’s hire is the latest move by the firm to drive forward the growth of its non-marine offering in Asia.

The Hong Kong office has significantly expanded its disputes and commercial litigation and insolvency practice in the past 12 months and estimates that these areas of work now account for three-quarters of all client instructions in Hong Kong.

Yvette Yu is a highly experienced litigation lawyer who advises on a broad range of contentious and advisory matters including complex and multi-jurisdictional commercial disputes, regulatory investigations and enforcement actions, public law issues and judicial review, consumer protection and product safety, and media and defamation.

Since qualifying from the University of Hong Kong in 2005, Ms Yu has acted on a number of high profile cases including the precedent-setting decision of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal on the power of the enforcement court in granting relief beyond the terms of the arbitral award in a common law enforcement action, and the first enforcement proceedings commenced by the Hong Kong Competition Commission.

Damien Laracy, head of office, Hill Dickinson Hong Kong, welcomed Ms Yu to the team saying: “Our disputes resolution offering has grown exponentially since we opened our Hong Kong office in 2013 and I am delighted that Yvette is joining us.

“As the world starts opening up again post-pandemic we are already seeing client demand grow. Adding further partner-level capability to our non-marine disputes team makes good commercial sense and also brings additional depth and breadth to the services we currently offer our clients. Our message to the market is that we have a growing and vastly experienced team here on the ground in Hong Kong, we have excellent local knowledge and connections and we are ready to assist.”

Bryan O’Hare, partner and head of the firm’s commercial and insolvency disputes practice in Hong Kong, added: “These are exciting times for our growing Disputes and Insolvency practice in Hong Kong. Our market share has improved significantly over the last five years with the support of our amazing clients across many sectors. We are now a recognised player in Asia and I look forward to working with Yvette to develop the practice further in Hong Kong and regionally.”

Mr Laracy added: “On a personal level, I had the pleasure of first meeting Yvette when we worked for the same law firm over 10 years ago. Being able to welcome her to Hill Dickinson at this stage of her career and to coincide with a steep rise in our disputes work post-Covid feels like an auspicious start. We’re very much looking forward to introducing Yvette to our clients.”

Ms Yu joins Hill Dickinson from Baker McKenzie, where she was Special Counsel. She is a solicitor advocate (civil) and a member of the Law Society of Hong Kong.
